55% Turnout in Tamil Nadu, 61% in Kerala Till 3 p.m.

An estimated 55 per cent of 4.7 crore electorate cast their votes till 3 pm in the elections to the 234-member Assembly in Tamil Nadu. Kerala recorded consistent rise in voter turnout in the Assembly elections on Wednesday with all the constituencies taken together registering over 61 per cent polling by 3 p.m.
So far, no major untoward incident had been reported during the polling, which would end at 5 pm, officials said. The fate of over 2,700 candidates, including those of main contenders for power DMK and AIADMK, will be sealed in the fiercely fought polls during which issues such as 2G spectrum allocation scam, inflation and power cuts besides a slew of local issues were raised.
According to the Election Commission, the State recorded a 61.2 per cent polling till 3 p.m, the heavy turnout being suggestive of a keen contest between the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). According to the Election Commission, Kannur, which witnessed heavy voter activity from the word go, registered the highest voter turnout of 66.5 per cent by 23 p.m. Kannur was followed closely by Alappuzha with 64.6 per cent, Kozhikode with 64.5 and Ernakulam with 64 per cent voter turnout. The State had registered 48.5 per cent polling by 1 p.m.
The polling percentages in the other districts till 3 p.m. were as follows: Kasaragod: 63.2 per cent, Wayanad: 60.4 per cent, Malappuram: 60.1 per cent, Palakkad: 62.5 per cent, Thrissur: 62.1 per cent, Idukki: 59.3 per cent, Kottayam: 61.5 per cent, Pathanamthitta: 57.3 per cent, Kollam: 58.7 per cent and Thiruvananthapuram: 54.7 per cent.
