Noida Farmers Strike turned Violent 4 Killed

Three persons, policemen Manbir Singh and Manohar Singh and a farmer, were killed as a “hostage drama” in Bhatta Parsaul village in Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh turned violent following a clash between farmers and the police on Saturday. District Magistrate of Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida) Deepak Agarwal, Superintendent of Police S.N. Singh and several others, including six policemen, were injured in firing and brick-batting.
Three Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) employees were taken hostage on Friday by farmers, who were demanding more compensation for their land acquired for development projects in Noida, Greater Noida and the Yamuna Expressway project.
Director General of Police Karamveer Singh said here that the police managed to secure the release of the kidnapped persons, driver Jitendra and supervisors Durgesh Bharadwaj and Niranjan Singh. Heavy police force was deployed in the village with the Meerut Police Commissioner and Inspector-General maintaining a close vigil. He said about 20 persons were arrested for resorting to violence and firing.
Mr. Singh alleged that farmers' leader Manveer Singh Tewatia incited the farmers to resort to agitation and violence. He said Mr. Tewatia beat a hasty retreat from the village following police action. “He is reported to have fled the village in his vehicle,” Mr. Singh told reporters.
After taking the three UPSRTC employees hostage, farmers led by Mr. Tewatia reportedly refused to interact with the Noida district officials. They demanded Chief Minister Mayawati's intervention for securing the release of the three. This was after the Noida district officials, on getting the news of the hostage drama, rushed to the village for talks with farmers in a bid to secure the release of the three, Mr. Singh said.
